Teach Your Kids About the Dentist – with Children’s Books!

Did you know that September is National Literacy Month? Parents, teachers and students place a focus on celebrating reading and literacy in the classroom, library and school every year at this time. Reading is vital to a child’s education and this month is a special time to highlight the tradition of reading as a family. Here are some great children’s books relating to teeth and the dentist that parents can read with their children in order to get them more comfortable about their dentist office visits!

What to Expect When You’re Going to the Dentist

Angus, the lovable Answer Dog, helps children understand what it’s like to visit the dentist for the first time. Written by best-selling author Heidi Murkoff, What to Expect When You’re Going to the Dentist talks about how, for kids, the dentist can be a little bit scary! But Angus explains how many changes have been made and how “opening up wide” isn’t the least bit fearful any longer. It can even be fun!

The Berenstein Bears Visit the Dentist

The Berenstein Bears books have been a children’s favorite for decades! The Berenstein Bears Visit the Dentist is perfect for kids – it is the story of how Sister Bear watches Dr. Bearson fill Brother Bear’s small cavity. Then it’s her turn in the chair to have one tiny baby tooth taken out. It will help kids get familiar with what a dentist visit is like and how fun it can be to go with a sibling!

The Tooth Book

Dr. Seuss’ The Tooth Book is a perfectly hilarious ode to teeth that will make your kids laugh and smile as they learn about what teeth are meant for, who has them and how to take care of them so they last for a lifetime! The illustrations by Jo Mathieu are wonderful and it’s a fun and charming book that your kids will learn from and treasure.

Doctor De Soto

Dr. De Soto is a mouse dentist who helps various animals cope with toothaches and other dental issues. If especially large animals visit the office, he either climbs up on a ladder or uses a pulley to reach inside their mouths! His assistant is very careful not to let dangerous animals into the office until a sweet old fox comes in with a bad tooth that needs to be pulled. Your kids will love the story in Doctor De Soto and it will help them be more at ease for their next trip to the dentist.

Just Going to the Dentist

Just Going to the Dentist, a classic by Mercer Mayer, tells the story of Little Critter going in to have a checkup at the dentist – and will show your kids that there is nothing to be afraid of! It covers having an X-ray taken, getting a teeth cleaning, finding a cavity and more and explains away the fears that kids might have. Parents and children will love reading this heartwarming book together.
