Orthodontic Treatment – The Benefits

Braces have had the reputation of primarily being an aesthetic procedure.  However, with modern advances and studies, Orthodontics have shown to provide many health benefits beyond a beautiful smile.  In fact, avoiding braces may cause more pain and cost later in life than the initial investment of Orthodontic treatment, and here’s why…

Oral Health

Surprisingly crooked teeth actually cause more harm than good.  With teeth being jammed packed into one another, it makes it harder to properly floss.  Being difficult to floss between crooked teeth, it can cause plaque to buildup and bacteria to grow.

Alignment issues may also cause an increased risk of gum disease.  When your teeth don’t sit properly in your gums it can create pockets between your teeth and gums.  Those pockets can attract more bacteria which when not properly taken care of, can lead to plaque buildup and periodontal disease.

If you’re concerned about bad breath, it may be time to see an Orthodontist.  Bad breath has also been linked to crooked teeth.  Without trying to sound repetitive, crooked teeth may cause lingering bacteria between your teeth and gums which causes bad breath.

Tooth Injury

Often times when your teeth are crooked, they create uneven surfaces and protrusion.  This may lead to faster depletion of the enamel which is aging your teeth quicker than usual.  With protruding teeth, it actually causes a higher risk for injury if you were to fall or be injured during a sports event.  They are more likely to be chipped or even fractured.

Overall Health

Gum disease has been linked to several serious diseases such as, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke and other concerning health risks.  So, investing in braces and practicing proper oral hygiene is another important benefit to your overall health.  Inflammation in your gums may lead to increased inflammation levels throughout your body which in turn, makes you more susceptible to other diseases.

The good news….

It is never too late for braces!  You don’t have to live with crooked teeth!  You can schedule a complimentary Orthodontic consultation to evaluate your Orthodontic needs.

The wonderful thing about modern advances is, there is an option for everyone!  There are traditional metal braces, ceramic braces and clear plastic aligners like Invisalign. Most Orthodontic practices have wonderful payment plan options as well as user-friendly credit line resources like Care Credit.

It is rare for Dental insurance to pay for Orthodontic treatment so choosing the right Orthodontist is important, who has your best interest at heart and will work with you on finding options that fit your budget.
