Healthy Lunches for Our Littles

Back-to-school season is just around the corner, and it’s time to start thinking about school lunches for your kids. If your kids are sick of slightly squished PB&Js, now is your time to rejoice: these school lunch ideas are healthy and fun!

Let’s dive in.

Tips for Packing School Lunches

Take the angst out of the school lunch process with these helpful tips:

  • Plan ahead. If you can swing it, make a meal plan each week and keep it close at hand. This allows you to take much of the guesswork out of planning school lunches, and increases the likelihood they’ll be a hit.
  • Change it up. Keep your school lunch arsenal varied, so your child doesn’t get bored.
  • Make it fun. Even if you don’t want to invest in pre-made “Lunchables” (or would rather keep the ingredients in your kids’ food a bit simpler), you can keep lunch fun with some DIY pizzas, wraps, dips, sauces, or nacho plates.
  • Invest in a box with divided compartments. Prevent soggy lunch messes by getting lunch boxes with divided compartments.

School Lunch Ideas

Keep lunch exciting with these healthy and simple lunch recipes:

Tortilla Wraps

Fill a whole-wheat tortilla with deli slices and cheese, roll it up, and cut it into small spirals. Pair it with a mixture of fruits, veggies, and nuts for a wholesome lunch that’s perfect for the warm back-to-school days.

DIY Lunchables

Take a whole-wheat pita, cut it into triangles, and include some hummus. Next, add some sliced deli meat, apple slices, and banana chips. This is a tooth-healthy option that will keep your kids full all day!

Egg “Salad” Sandwich

For a healthier version of egg salad, mix hard-boiled eggs (or shredded chicken) with Greek yogurt, dijon mustard, and salt and pepper. Spread the mixture on whole-grain bread, cut into small squares, and serve with some veggie and fruit slices.

DIY Pizza

Make pizza day budget-friendly and healthy! Cut up some whole-wheat pitas, include a small amount of tomato sauce in a separate container, and then throw in some shredded cheese and some pepperoni slices. Serve with fruit and vegetables.
